Ethics In Social Network Marketing
As someone who is involved in online business, it is important to maintain integrity. Some marketers use social networking sites for unethical behavior in attempting to market ones products and services, and that can seriously backfire! There are rules that must be followed when marketing a business website.
Respect Other People’s Privacy
it is important to keep in mind that when using social networking, whether as a marketing tool or otherwise, you are joining a community. This means that you are expected not to invade other people’s privacy, such as sending spam marketing promotions to those on your friends lists.
There is nothing wrong with using Facebook or twitter to drive traffic to one’s business website, but you must be careful to refrain from sending anything that might be considered spam to avoid damaging your reputation and being dropped by the network.
Social networking websites are more aware of such strategies than ever and are keen to remove those who habitually use such tactics in their marketing efforts.
Be Honest and Professional
Fortunately, there are ways to become a member of the online community on the social networking websites you participate in. You need merely to register and then to become actively and productively involved with the online groups that are related to your area of expertise or specialization. You want to make friends within the community and provide valuable and helpful information that people are looking for. In this way, you can prove yourself as an expert in your field in which you are offering your products and services.
Publish Quality Content
Always be honest in your dealings and avoid misleading people or giving deceptive information regarding your products and services.
One example of an unethical practice to avoid is pretending to be a customer recommending your products and services, and such behavior has gotten some big companies in trouble in recent years. Avoid heavy-handed marketing tactics in general and leave the decision to the online community as to whether to view your products and services.
You should avoid attacking her harshly criticizing your competitors, but you can point out the shortcomings of their products and specify what makes your’s unique or superior. Your best results on the social networks will come from being helpful. You should participate and interact on the social networks. The more you put into them, the more you can get out of them.
Use the Tools You Need
Software can help. For example, the third-party software program Socialite provides access to Digg, Flickr, Twitter, Facebook and RSS feeds in one desktop application. Yoono desktop for Windows, Macintosh and Linux provides a similar capability.
If you want to provide helpful information about your products, services or your industry in general to draw fans and build your reputation, you will need to do some writing. A voice dictation program like DragonDictate for Mac or Dragon NaturallySpeaking for Windows can help in this area, especially if you don’t care to type. This software allows you to convert your thoughts into written text as easily as speaking. Of course, careful proofreading will still be necessary, but a lot of people consider such tools to make writing far less of a chore than typing everything by hand.
While there are no hard and fast rules about what constitutes ethical practices within the social networking sphere, it is a good idea to educate yourself in the area of media law regarding the dangers of defamation and invasion of online privacy. However, if you conduct yourself professionally and follow these guidelines, you should fare well in successfully reaching your goals.

Great article, i think its important to remember than while most people on facebook, twitter etc are aware they are constantly being targeted by businesses promoting their products or services this is not the reason they are on there. Linkedin is obviously different, but i always still aim to offer something informative rather than just promote my website and services.
